The More Personalization The Better
We just added the ability to customize your site's favicon. If you're not familiar with favicons, they're those little icons that show up next to the site name or URL:
The favicon selector control can be found on the main settings page and also on the Add Blog page (if you're a paying customer). It couldn't be simpler to set up: just upload an appropriate image and press the page's Save button.
The tricky part is in creating a favicon because there's a lot of
restrictions. For example, it must be 16 pixels wide by 16 pixels high.
It must be an ICO file if you want the most browsers to be able to see
it: Internet Explorer can only use ICO-based favicons. If you're not worried about Internet Explorer, then you can use GIF-, JPEG-, or even PNG-formatted images and all the other browsers will show them just fine.
There are a plethora of resources on the Web about creating favicons, as this Google search for favicon shows. Favicons aren't terribly important but they are a detail that will make your blog more your own.

I looked around and found a favicon I like readymade. Can I upload a free favicon off the net? If so, do I save it somewhere first or take it directly from the site to my settings page? Let me know what voodoo to do.
Thanx
Greetings,
Ok let me help you do that voodoo that you do. It's easiest if you save the file first to your desktop and then upload it to us. It's likely not to work by entering the URL directly into the browse section.

Thank you for your assistance. I did what was needed and the favicon shows up on my settings page just as it should look but not on the site when I pull it up. There it still has the Explorer icon. Would you please peek in and tell me what I'm missing? Thx
Greetings Ali,
It appears that you've been with us a while and the template you have is older, by about two revisions, and would need updated/ republished prior to this item functioning. On the bright side there's more to chose from , the editor allows greater control and we've really neated up some display issues with the comments.

my favicon comes and goes randomly, seems ok right now. Plus since my blog is a subdomain, shouldn't it be possible to use the favicon across the whole domain including the sub-domains?
Thanks
Lionel
Greetings Lionel,
I'm afraid that the favico doesn't work in that manner and isn't actually tied to the domain but to the application or page served there. You would need to include it within each app used. I can see that this would be useful if they were all Godaddy applications though and we'll have a discussion about the feasibility of sharing these over programs in the future.
Is the randomness occurring on the same browser? FF has an easier time handling these in many formats whereas IE is quite a stickler for a suitably formatted ico file.

Thanks John. My favicon is working okay now, but yes I was on the same browser, the dreaded IE7.
I remember reading somewhere that if a favicon file is installed in the root directory would work on the entire domain, any thoughts on that?
Thanks again,
Lionel

It used to work that way, still does for people that directly control the root directory of the servers, but it's not the model QB works on and we link to it within the page itself. If you had other services with us they wouldn't share the same hosting area so a general favico accross the domain is possible but not with us presently

Favicons tend to come and go on Internet Explorer. Try to look at it also on Netscape and Firefox. The latter two allow animated and transparent favicons, which we tell you how to make at http://www.cathetel.com/favicon.htm .
