Nuggets of wisdom? The chicklet , an easier way for people to subscribe to your Quick blog.

We didn’t invent the “chicklet” we just made them easier to use with your Quick Blog.  You may have noticed on your sojourn around the “mediasphere”, of which blogs are one part, that many bloggers have a slough of graphical additions adorning their sidebars to provide “one click syndication” for users of various services or a “chicklet”   Many of you already know that   a proportion of your readers rarely visit your blog’s webpage but have used our default chicklet, our friend   the rss feed icon, to locate your blogs feed to enter into their favorite rss reader.

Sounds like a lot of work, click the rss icon, copy the feed URL,  open up your  rss reader and paste in the URL,  a lot of hurdles to jump over for many users. Well with a little cut and paste on your end your reader’s won’t have to do this for many popular services. All they have to do to add you to their choice of reader is click on  Add to My Yahoo!, and the blog feed is added to their account for the chosen service.

Owners of the paid blog can use our custom text/ html feature to add chicklets to their sidebar. Firstly let's get the chicklet from ,;Google Reader or Homepage or similar service.  We’re going to use Add to My Yahoo!; for our example. Let’s start by creating a chicklet with one of these services.

 http://my.yahoo.com/s/button.html

Choose your style of button, fill out your blogs feed URL ( it's your blog url with /rss2.aspx on the end) and copy the code which you can place in your Quickblog sidebar.

Go to Design Blog and select sidebar.    Drag a custom text component across to the active side, give it a name and paste in the code, click save on the bottom of the component and then click save on the bottom of the screen.  A little cut and paste on your end means that your users won’t have to.

You can create as many chicklets using this method as you like though good taste dictates, arbitrarily defined by me, that anything over five appears to have a “Tower of Babel” effect. The more you stack the less obvious it is what you’re trying to communicate.

I have the code for Yahoo. Can you check the links to Google and MSN?

    Are they correct?

      Gary,

No links appeared withing the  comment  or  on your blog to verify.  I used a third party creator for the chicklet that I can't directly recommend. A  search for  blog chicklet creator on google provides many solutions.  Basically they ask you enter  your blog url  e.g http://soanetworkarchitect.com/rss2.aspx for your main feed address, check off the services you would like to create chicklets for and then it creates the code for you to paste into your test/html sidebar.   I'm going to work on appending  more items to the post for the services mentioned.

While people can subscribe to a Quick Blog, I can't find any way for the blog administrator to view the subscription list. If this is possible, it's not in the help list. If this is not possible, then does GoDaddy have a blog package that will allow this?

      Greetings Poli,

This is an issue that's been addressed in more detail within this comment. Here's a brief excerpt

The reason we currently do not let the admin see the addresses of those subscribed is one of subscriber choice. We really don't know if those signing up to receive mailed blog entries/comments wish any interaction with the blog owner. We are looking into  giving the subscribers the choice of letting their name be known to the admin which would hopefully meet your request.

This is the only hosted blog that we offer at present though there are blogs that you can install yourself ,free with our shared hosting accounts , that have this ability such as Serendipity.

We are eagerly awaiting to see what is next. We have not seen much activity here lately. Can you give us a clue as to what we can look forward to for new features etc in the near future ?

Let me begin by saying that I wish we could talk about things we've got planned. We're excited and we'd love to have our customers excited as well.

Unfortunately, we really cannot discuss the future. First, we like to keep things close to our vests because releases aren't set in stone. Sometimes we have to drop features as needs change. To publicly disclose a feature and then axe it looks bad (*ahem* Vista). Second, with the IPO, there are very strict rules about what we can say. The natural enthusiasm that would seep into any forward-looking entry could be interpreted as exerting undue influence on the market. I guess.

      Sorry, Bill

Points well taken Bill, thanks for the clarification.

As it happens, we (your customers) don't actually want to talk about new features either. What we would much prefer is to see them released. :-)

There's clearly a great deal of exasperation ^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H enthusiasm in the user community regarding a fairly small number of issues.

Not to be unduly provocative, but c'mon guys. This ain't rocket science. It's been weeks since we've seen anything. A little help here, if you please.

        Cheers, the GrumbleGeek

It's very hard to speak to your sentiment without overstepping the boundaries mentioned before. I can assure you that we are developing apace and that we are addressing issues that have been brought up. We appreciate all the patience thus far and hope that you'll stick with us.

We've been releasing about once a month since December 2005 (sometimes more, sometimes less) and there's no signs that that's going to stop.

Wishing I could say more, Bill

Thanks for sharing the info. How do I get the chicklets to align underneath one another without adding a separate custom text box?

Probably a simple answer but i did not see it discussed. Thank you.

The easiest way would probably be to wrap the whole lot of them in a tag like so: <div align="center">the pasted chicklets</div>

      Hope that helps, Bill

This doesn't exactly relate to the chicklets, but I may add one or two once I resolve this. When I started QuickBlogcast and initially chose settings, I checked for all types of feeds (Atom 1, RSS1 & RSS2), and my sidebar feedlist showed all of these for entries, not comments, as I wanted. I had renamed the feed list to "Syndicate" and all was well. Then I noticed that the sidebar was displaying Atom for entries and comments and RSS1 for entries and comments instead. I don't know when this changed, I noticed it today. So I went back to my settings, confirmed all correct boxes were checked, and then to my sidebar to see if I could edit what was there. It only allows me to edit the name of the component, Syndicate, and not what it contains. Now after opening to see what I could edit, the sidebar component shows nothing under Syndicate...just an empty box. Please advise on what went wrong and how to get my feedlist back. Thanks

I just wrote you re feedlist on sidebar. After, I went to the sidebar one more time and opened the item I'd renamed Syndicate. I saved it again and all RSS is showing (1&2) but also for comments, which I really don't want. Any suggestion on how to only show entry syndication? All I want to show is Entries Atom 1.0, Entries RSS 1.0, Entries RSS 2.0, Podcasts RSS 2.0 (for our future podcasts). Thanks.

      Greetings Starr,

There is a way to get the view you like but it 's a little work around.  Create a blog roll for the links  that you wish to display to your feeds.  It's located within the same sidebar area  as the feedlist.  I'll take a look into providing a check box to show comment feeds. Thanks for taking the time to let us know your needs.
