Release 1.2.4 Would you like sides with that?
Firstly thanks to all of those that took the time to write us with requests for additional features within the sidebar area of Quickblog. We’ve expanded the sidebar feature allowing you to place custom text/html, advertising and rename most of the sidebar features. We’ll take a look at each one below in greater detail. The first two features are only available on the paid version.
Sidebar updates:
To modify any of the items below please log into your Quick Blog account and click on “Sidebar” which is in the “Design Blog”
Google™ Ads
One of our more popular user requests has been to allow the use of advertising and affiliate programs within Quickblog’s sidebar area. We’ve taken the most popular request Google's™ Adsense and created a dedicated item for you to plug your existing account information into. Currently the format of the blog restricts this to one “skyscraper” column within the sidebar. Click on the item, paste in your code and then save the item.
Custom Html/Text
Want to place a photo bug, link to an affiliate program or just set up a custom message within your sidebar? Now you can. This section is limited only by the imagination and the dictates of having your item display correctly within the sidebar. (e.g. trying to fit a large image into a small space is never pretty, we are only showing what has been asked of us)
Note that you can also include “hidden” html, an advanced feature, by unchecking “show on blog” This removes a visual reference to the sidebar item being present and allows people to include custom content for other web services .
The following enhancements are available for all users.
Rename Side bar Components
Nearly all of the sidebar components can now be renamed, the exceptions being “created by Quickblog, “Home Link” and “Google Ad” To rename, click on the pencil icon
Enhanced emoticon support
Another feature that came from a user request was that we extend the availability of emoticons, available to those leaving comments, to the write entry and comment sections within the blog itself. Now when you : ) the whole blog
If you have any comment regarding these new features, or Quick Blog related, please let us know and we’ll do our best to accommodate you in a future release.

I need more information on google ads. Do we get revenue from these ads. Do we have to sign up with google to recieve any money for these ads. How do we sign up?, etc.
Gary
Gary,
The Adsense sidebar option is for those people that have an existing , or wish to set up , account with the Google Adsense program. The ads that display on your Web site are based on your content. When a visitor clicks the ad, you earn revenue based on their terms and conditions. For more information about Google AdSense, see Google AdSense.

Hi John! I use Godaddy for everything but was getting ready to go w/ powerblogs...glad I found this. Anyway, what about adding a PayPal button to the sidebar in addition to adsense. any problem there? Can you e-mail me the answer, or? Thanks!
Greetings,
You can already carry out this using the custom text/ html sidebar item design blog menu. (paid blog only)
Go to Design Blog and select sidebar. Drag a custom text component across to the active side, give it a name and paste in the code for the paypal service you wish to use ( I"m being vague since they have many services) , click save on the bottom of the component and then click save on the bottom of the screen. I'll look into the suggestion that we make this function like the Adsense item within a future build. Thanks for your suggestion and for trying out Quick Blog.

Nice! Thanks for the update...time to go play in the admin section!!! ;)
You're welcome, sir. Time to get some money for all that blogging you've been doing lately.<br /><br />Keeping up the good work, Bill
I'm loving this blog software. It works well with my site. I just came from Blogger so the importing entries post will be helpful.
I was wondering if you are ever going to add a custom colors option to the templates? I would love to tweak the colors.
Also, is there a way to make my post titles bigger? Just up a font size or two?
Thanks so much! I really am loving Quick Blog!
I am very pleased that you like our application. Both of the features you requested are under consideration for inclusion in future releases.
Wishing I could give specific dates, Bill
In the land of competition,
Those who play with innovation are kings.
Once again, you continue to improve your product with original modules. I simply loving the Custom Text. Ive already made a "Featured Article of the Week" with a small pic of the article.
The Google Ads, well, you know I placed them the second you guys gave me the feature.
:):):):):)
You have earned Blog Status: Alpha!
- I send a nice mix of a cheer, a booya, a high five and the wave (one man)!
May you continue to make us, the costumers, happy.
Alexander Wunderlich,
One question. Can I run Java Applets in the custom text?
I see that you have mastered the art of the feature request: high praise followed by flattery with a dash of suggestion at the end.
D'oh, I probably just let that cat out of the bag.
There's no reason why you can't add a Java applet into the custom text. The only tricky part is the location of the Java file itself. You'd have to upload the file through the entry editor by clicking on the little file icon. Once you uploaded it, it would be in your user directory and then you would just use that location in your embed or object tag. I'd give more specific information, but I've never used Java applets in a site before.
Thanks, Bill
I would like to see some examples of this or some code so I could modify myself. Any user sites who have enabled this capability would be good.
Gary
Gary,
To clarify are you requesting specific examples in relation to Adsense or the preceding comments re the custom use of running a java applet within the sidebar? With regards to the latter If we identify a feature that's useful to those using Quick Blog then we'll integrate that feature into the sidebar itself rather than have our users modify code to achieve the same effect. If there's a specific goal you'd like to see an example address let me know.

Quick Blog Team.
I'd like to make a few suggestions for enhancements specific to the subscription function.
1) Once someone subscribes from the main page of your blog, it remembers that they are subscribed (I assume by a cookie). Instead of simply stating back "You are subscribed" is would be nice if it said "You are already subscribed to relieve these messages at email@domain.com." Then give an option to change or remove.
2) As the aite admin, I'd like to see a list of all of the people who are subscribed to my site. A config dialog related to this would be nice, with the ability to add or remove people as well.
3) Related to number 2 above, if you could list the name of the person along with their email address that would be really great. This information would need to be gathered from the user at subscription time.
Greetings Jim,
Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback.
The reason we currently do not let the admin see the addresses of those subscribed is one of subscriber choice. We really don't know if those signing up to receive mailed blog entries/comments wish any interaction with the blog owner. We are looking into giving the subscribers the choice of letting their name be known to the admin which would hopefully meet your request.
There are issues arising from the creation of unverified subscribers ( Those that have not made a request / verified it) which would make this an unlikely addition to Quick Blog though we are looking at ways where we could improve the features within this section.

John
Quick Blog Team
I too would like to have more information on my subscribers, so I second these suggestions! :)
I have many users of my website who actively provide me with their email addresses in order to provide them with information - I would like the ability to add subscribers and to view the addresses of my subscribers.
At the moment I simply bypass one of your 'shortcomings' by deleting the cookie and subscribing on people's behalf (which they can then confirm) - deleting the cookie again and so on...
This however, is a long winded process and unnecessary provided people have the option to unsubscribe as they please.
Greetings,
Thanks for adding your voice to this issue. I'd really thought that the blogs themselves would be the communication with the user. Though I can see from the comments that it's seeming a desirable feature. As mentioned in the past it's being considered so that both the blog owner and subscriber can have control which will only work for the email subscribers those that use rss or visit the site will remain for most practical terms anonymous. Thank you for taking the time to commen on Quick Blog and hopefully we can accommodate these changes in a future release.

John
Quick Blog Team.
With AdSense you say to "paste in your code", but what code is that? I have a new AdSense account - do I use the username I signed up with or the numeric key that is in the javascript I paste into my other sites? Or is it the code in my AdSense Account Settings page (the one that starts with "ca-pub- then a bunch of numbers.)
I ask because I have tried everything, but viewing the source of my blog, I only ever see "ca-godaddy_js" as the google_ad_client, no matter what I put in as my key...
You should use the mostly numeric key that is in the Javascript.
Thanks, Bill
I like those little chicklets, the user-friendly buttons that allow readers to subscribe to a blog through My Yahoo or My MSN (or any other newsreader) without copying and pasting HTML. Very helpful for the tech-impaired. Can I install chicklets on my QB blog?
Ray,
Greetings users of the paid blog can use the custom text/ html feature to accomplish this. Firstly let's get the chicklet from Yahoo or similar service. http://my.yahoo.com/s/button.html
Choose your button, fill out the blog url and get the code which you can place in your Quickblog sidebar. Go to Design Blog and select sidebar. Drag a custom text component across to the active site , give it a name and paste in the code ,click save on the bottom of the component and then save on the bottom of the screen. So a little cut and paste on your end means your users wont have to. You can create as many chicklets using this method as you like, though I think good taste has this number around five

I have hosting with you guys already and was looking at getting your quick blog. However I am a little concerned with how search engine friendly it is. Is it possible to add meta tags, custom titles, etc.?
In your opinion how is the quick blog system SEO friendly?
Thanks
Eric
It is not currently possible to add meta tags, but all of the URLs are *very* search engine friendly. And titles are customizable per entry. My personal blog is very well indexed by Google and the other search engines, so, as always, it's a case of build good content and they'll come.
Hope that helps, Bill
Bill,
Do you mind if I look at your personal blog to do some research on it and see how the SE view your site, or is it almost the same as this blog?
Thanks for the reply.
Eric
The URL formats are exactly the same though my blog has been in existence for several more years. I'm sorry, but I really can't link to my blog from the official blog. If you're a search engine master, you can find me easily enough.<br /><br />Keep on blogging, Bill
how about google ads in content?
Good idea! I will put that on our ideas for future consideration list, which is getting mighty long.<br /><br />Thanks for the suggestion, Bill
I did find your blog... it seems to be ok... One of my biggest concerns is the post structure of using the date as the directories instead of a category name...
i.e. blogdomain.com/2006/06/12/blogtitle.aspx
It would be better like this:
blogdomain.com/category1/blogtitle.aspx
I take it this would be too big of a request to give it the option of choosing between the directory structure naming convention though?
Overall though I think the more SEO friendly you make the software the more it will appeal to certain people; it is off to a good start though! Much better than many I have seen; at this point my only other options are wordpress and moveabletype which I do not want the hassle of setting up
:(
Well, there's certainly no reason why we couldn't offer different URL schemes. It just gets very complicated very fast. I'll put that on the something-to-look-into-further list.
Thanks for the compliments, Bill
Hi Guys,
Once again, great work! I'm having to work overtime to take advantage of all your great new features (just signed up for adsense!)!
Quick question...I've looked quite a bit for a list of the subscribers to my blog. Can I see that information?
Thanks!
I am so glad that we're keeping you busy. Unfortunately for you, we're not letting up! You cannot see the list of email subscribers to your blog. John covered this in an earlier comment, but we do not allow access to this because there is no privacy policy or consent in the subscribe via email feature. I like to think of it as RSS via email. As such, we would be remiss if we allowed visitors to be contacted when they haven't specifically opted-in.
I hope you can appreciate that we're just trying to look out after the visitor's interests as well as the interests of the Internet community as a whole. That being said, we are looking into ways to allow for this interaction that satisfy all parties.
Keep an eye out, Bill
Ooops as Bill posted earlier prior to my posting earlier this is getting to be one atavistic post.
Greetings,
Thanks for the kind words with regards to the new features. Your comment with regards to the blog subscribers visibility to the admin is a recurring one but as with all items of this nature one of two things occurs.
The email subscription form currenltly asks the reader one thing. "do you want to receive blog entries/comments?" We can't make the decision for the readers that subscribing via email is an invitation for the blog owner to mail them with any other material. The best scenario would be one in which we provide the reader the choice to allow the owner to see that info and the owner to require users to give that permission should they be so inclined. We're considering such a feature and any feedback on this solution or alternatives is welcome.

John

On the subject of meta tags...Would it be possible under an advanced editor to view/edit the template's html so the section could be manipulated. Blogger allowed this and it was primarily used to add meta tags. I've recently moved my blog from Blogger and am really impressed with the tools here at GoDaddy - great job!
Glad you like it! I will add a check to the meta tag editing page on the future functionality list. We had no idea that that was such a sought-after feature. Yet another reason why I love having this blog.<br /><br />Thanks for the suggestion, Bill
Hi Guys,
I searched this time before I'm asking. :)
So, two things...
1) How do you get the number to show up after comments and trackbacks like on your page? I couldn't find anything in settings to enable that.
2) Can I upload and use an Flash SWF for my image at the top of my site? I know I would be able to load something into the sidebar, but I want it at the top.
Great Job as always, guys...
Thanks!
Craig
Craig,
Greetings
Firstly the good news. The comment and trackback counts are Our earliest users , thanks
Flash .. Aaa ahhh . oh wait sorry I am going to have to be a little merciless on this one and inform you that this is not currently possible. However it's obviously a useful idea that we are going to look at incorporating into a future release of the blog.

Hi John...
OK, no flash yet. I will try an animated GIF although they're lame compared to Flash...
I completed the Template upgrade/maintenance without a hitch. Great job guys!
Thanks again!
Craig
OK, for lack of a better place to post this, here's some of the things that bug me about Quickblog, simple enough to fix on the development end but enough to dissuade me from using Quickblog. Mostly superficial flaws that affect aesthetics, but still important if you plan on putting a lot of effort into it, everything should be just so.
First, the redundancy of "View Comments" and "Add Comments" is simply, excuse me now for being blunt, retarded. All it is is extra clutter that accomplishes nothing but taking up space. It makes me wonder if the designer has habitually read blogs before setting out to create Quickblog, because there is no reason for there to be both options, or at least no reason to make them both appear at the end of the blog post mandatorily, without option for configuration by those who would like to remove useless cruft. A simple "Comments (#)" would suffice.
Second (and I could maybe live with this first design failure), is the "READ MORE>>" button. Puhleez. Apparently, it serves no purpose because there is no way to remove the button from showing if you'd like to front-page the entire post... and only seems to exist so the lame survey crapola can show up. Can anyone say useless? Maybe there is some html code one can type in your post to stop that annoying read more button from showing up, but I am unaware of it.
I really really hate blogs that use the read more button for posts that are a couple paragraphs long, and tend not to read them, and I really really really hate blogs that have a read more button that, when you press it, doesn't have anything more that wasn't on the main page (lame crapola surveys not included), it shows disrespect for the reader and their time when a read more button tricks them into viewing the same content. SO PLEASE MAKE THIS OPTIONAL.
Anyone who reads blogs daily will attest to the annoyance factor of "Read More", except when good content deserves splitting a post for length, photos, etc.
Minor quibbles:
Centering "Back to main page" text in sidebar header, "Syndicate this blog", "Recent Entries" etc. A simple bit of code in those would make them more appealing for some (or, how bout an option to actually edit that text?).
The little "Printer Icon" inside posts is useless for a lot of people, and probably 99 % of blog posts written anywhere. How often does anyone print blog posts? More useless cruft that is just eye clutter.
-Remove from syndicate sidebar badge "Comments RSS 2.0" while keeping "Entries RSS 2.0" -More clutter, comments rss are probably only used by about 5% of blog users, if that. No need to have it on sidebar.
Anyway, 2 things that need to be done are:
merging/optional removal of one of the REDUNDANT comment buttons
&
optional disabling of "MORE>" button. This will greatly simplify, streamline, and improve the design. (if theres a simple html code to append entries with, please advise)
All this said, its a decent tool but for these obvious and simple to fix probs
Ok, i gotta learn to read, fixed the centering of sidebar titles and was able to change "Back to Main Page" link to "Home Page" and get it centered by using custom text, checking box, leaving title blank, and putting link in custom text box.
Here's a workaround sloppy hack for removing the comments rss i was complaing about, that has the added benefit for adding a "Live Bookmark" chiclet for firefox (I'm not sure how the html code will render in the comment here, but here goes nothing):
Name the thing Feeds, or something like it, then add this code in the custom text part-
RSS 2.0
Atom 1.0
A quick and dirty workaround to add the easy-to-use RSS chiclet and remove the crufty comments rss links from the sidebar.
The code doesn't show up unless the user mouses over it and notes the URL but I referenced your workaround within the main reply
Regards
John
Quick Blog Team
About that rss chiclet for the address bar, I think you may have to add your url where the .index part is to get the live bookmark to actually load, I'll mess around with it when I got time.
About the "More >>" part, is there any way I can kill it by writing something into my entry? I was being serious about that being a make or break thing for usability, if it can't be amended I imagine I will use blogspot or some other service for a coming travel blog, even though I've paid for this service. Must. Remove. Read. More. Button.
Thanks.
Greetings,
With regards to the masking of the more there's nothing I'm able to suggest that would have the desired effect. I assure you we understand your feelings with regards to the presence of the "more" link within short entries have been noted Allowing the user to control the non appearance of more is being considered for a future release.

John
Quick Blog Team
Hi John, thanks for the good work on QB.
Just had to jump in and strongly second abcd's request to make the "MORE >>" link optional per entry, or better yet automatically omitted if the entry is posted in it's entirety on the main page (as I like to do). Having a "MORE >>" link that doesn't provide any extra info is universally annoying for readers and reflects poorly on both the blogger and on QB.
If this was the ONLY update in a new release it would be worth the time and effort. Please, please implement this as soon as possible.
Thanks for your time --
Thank you for seconding the request. The more people that pine for a feature (or a correction to an existing feature), the better. I can't say that I'm a big fan of the "MORE >>" either.
Your opinion counts, Bill
To ABC's comments about the printer icon.
Leave it, or make it optional, but its not useless at all! Every sinlge article I've written has recieved a print out.
Its really good that the reader gets a printer friendly version so he can go out and show the world without carrying his PC.
To the "MORE" Id second it, with a small twist. Not only make it optional, but make it custumizable per each blog, ie. like place the a "continue reading" + title of the article. It would really easy-up my life because I allways add this manually.
I also would like that the article image on the front page is linked to go to the permalink of the article, I always do this manually aswell.
Keep pumping iron Quick Blog team, I'm really enjoying the service!!

Certainly will consider the idea of adding a configurable element to the links on the posts it's a good idea for more, or any of the controls placed there. The Article image is something that I'm thinking about with regards to making blog links easier to add , especially internal ones. Thanks again for your feedback. Keep watching out for updates.
Sometimes it seems like more is less. Well you're really thirding the demise of the more but whose counting? Oh, yes . We are

Hello again! I'm working through this whole new world. Question...do you have the feature "xml pinging"? I understand that this is an important feature to consider when choosing a blog service. Thanks for you quick replies! Kenney
Kenny,
While we automatically ping several search/ blog search engines automatically though this is not a user definable option at this time. Each entry does have a section where you can enter addresses that you wish to notify (ping) at the time of their publication. Are there specific services of features that you are wishing to see us include?

After extensive use, I've compiled a small, humble, oh so humble, list of things that would be useful if added, some for us, the bloggers, and the others, most importantly, for the reader:
For the Bloggers:
1. It would be really nice if we could sort the pictures in the Pics selector, sometimes I'll upload new drawings and they'll be archived in the middle pages; a real pain to find.
2. On the statistics page of the administrator, just a simple total for the IP Adresses Repot (Unique IP's) and a total for the Hits. Yep, I don’t ask for much and it' be' quite the treat.
3. Adding to the Stats: To be able to see the hits of all the entries (on the "Entries" tab) not just the top 10.
4. …and more on the Stats: To be able to sort the Article Views Tab, not just by daily, but monthly, and by category. Something like that, you guys are pretty creative, you can come up with something ;)
b>For the Readers:
1. When clicking on a category, one sees the titles of all the entries under this category… the titles only :(. I would feel like its my birthday if I saw the title, and the excerpt as well.
2. I mentioned this before, but just in case it got lost somewhere in cyberspace --The Pagination. At the end of the main page, have a "next page" link, that takes us to the next 20 entries (or whatever configuration the blogger has on his blog).
3. Capitalizing on the pagination, how about having a "Next" and a "Previous" on every entry, and clicking on the "Next" takes us to the newer entry within that entries category, and clicking on previous… well… takes us to an older entry within its category. If it’s the only one in its category, or uncategorized, simply nothing appears. I know this is quite the Moby Dick of petitions, but it would be a very nice innovation to go on top of the competition ;).
That is all, keep up the terrific job.
Alexander Wunderlich
.
Greetings Alexander,
The good news is that many of these items are already under consideration for a future release. Those being the gallery/ picture changes as well as the pagination issues.
Stats are one of those areas that a year from now , maybe seeing all the stats for all entries , won't be too enjoyable

Are all of these patches, fixes or updates or however they are referenced added to the Help File System immediately or at a later date.
Thanks
Ron
Greetings Ron,
Updates are usually launched at the same time as the feature's placed within Quick Blog or within a very short timeframe thereafter. Generally all the new features and updates , visible additions or changes to how Quick Blog work are listed within the entry pertaining to the release have new help items.

Hey guys, any ETA on the next release?
(...Which will include control over the "MORE >>" link, right? hint hint)
Greetings
To date we've never provided release dates , vague or specific, since I don't wish to promise anything prior to our being able to deliver it. The more link we're pretty much in agreement something need to change, though what and when? Please keep a look out for future updates.

Re Sidebar.... I'd like to upload my own square or skyscraper images with links in the sidebar - cant figure out how/where to accomplish that! Help!
Nance, Greetings and thanks for posting. Within the sidebar the custom text/html item gives you the ability to post content such as you mentioned it's found in Design blog / sidebar. With regards to specific examples on how to achieve this we don't have any sample code for the specific task, ie are you wishing an image that has one destination when you click it, or a series of links atop an image? We may be able to give you some pointers with further information. Regards John Quick Blog team
Hi! Is there any way a pop-under ad will work on my Quick Blog? I am trying to make money on my site, and have copied the code for the ad into my sidebar, but I am pretty sure it needs to go into HTML for the site. The ad doesn't pop under or at all.
Is there any way to access the HTML? I wish we had more control over the actual HTML on the site. Is that something you are working on?
Hi Rosie, It's possible that such a feature could work with our custom HTML sidebar, however, I have no insight into the method you are trying to use or the requirements of that script so yes it's feasible that such an item could work. As noted we currently don't provide the level of control , ie full acces tothe HTML body though we are investigating ways in which we could improve this over future releases Regards John Quick Blog Team
Just started a paid blog with Godaddy because of the simplicity, being a blogging newbie. My main problem is not being able to use HTML in the posting editor. When I use the editor, all seems to go as it is supposed to, but when I save/submit a new post or edit one, when it appears on the blog site, the text has no formatting whatsoever.
When I first started I was able to paste formatted entries in the editor and it worked fine (look at two on my site), but that doesn't work now. Also HTML doesn't work when making sidebar entries. Can you help me out so that my posts don't look so "blah"?
Appreciate any assistance.
John Farrow
The major problem is that Quick Blog uses excerpts on the front page if they're available. You've got excerpts defined for your entries. If you don't have them (or if you turn automatic excerpting off--you have it set to automatically excerpt one sentence), then the front page will contain your full entries. This is what Quick Blogging does. (Also, turning off automatic excerpting will not immediately solve the issue; you still have to delete the excerpts yourself.)
You also mention problems with HTML in sidebar entries. I'm guessing that you're speaking about the problem in your Custom Text about Betty Dillon that probably wasn't working for you. It's because you've put in an entire HTML document instead of a snippet of HTML. You can't have multiple HTML documents on a page (you can, but what gets displayed is anyone's guess).
Hope that helped, Bill
How can I change Google Ads configuration. For example, I would like to modify the links/titles colors to match the blog overall backgorund.
Juan,
I'm afraid that's a little more of a manual, but quite achievable process. You would have to create the ads over in your Google account and then match the links / colors for the template and create the ad banner. Copy and paste into one of our custom text/ html sidebars rather than using the Google side bar item and it should match up nicely.

John
Quick Blog team.
I was wondering if it is technically possible to add more adsense to the posts body section?
I mean, besides the adsene already displayed on the navigation menu.
Thank you,
Greeting Juan,
It's indeed possible to place adsense within the bodies of your post , while we don't automatically do this presently it's already on my list for a future version. Basically you can paste the adsense html directly into the blogpost , first switch to HTML, then switch back though greater success can be had by using a blogging client such as Scribefire or Windows Live Writer to format it. Not all ad types will work successfully but if you have a specific example of the kind you wish to use let me know and I can go into greater depth.

Sorry for using the reply for posting a different question.
I need to place the Google Verification code in the head area. How can I do that? What I have done so far is to create a custom text, but google is saying the placement of this piece of code is not correct, it should be put further up in the head.
Thank you for your attention,
Juan
Juan ,
Greetings ,
I'm afraid we don't yet have this as an option but with recent changes to our templte editor we will be able to accommodate items like these in a future release.

Would just like to express my interest in being able to add a meta tag. One thing I am curious about too is, how do you add another page to my blog? is this possible? I am new to all this but having lots of fun learning.
Thank you
jon
Greetings Jon,
We have the addition of metatags and the ability to add to the head area of the blogcast coming up in a future release. Presently there's no way to add a static page type to the blog and other than linking to an existing page in the side bar there's no practical way to add it to the navigation at this time. Let me know what kind of pages you are looking for or the function and I'll add it to the to do list.
